Message Now I know this was a really, really stupid thing to do. But here's how it went down:

Southern California. October 2003. My girlfriend lives in the San Fernando Valley and I live in Ontario. That's a 60 mile drive. So I go to visit one night after work and end up staying late. It's close to midnight (or after midnight) and I've gotta go home so I can get some sleep for work the next day.

It's one of those nights where you feel like you can push the envelope a bit, just because you feel good. Now normally, I drive like a grandma and try to get the most gas mileage out of my Z, but I decided to speed home. I was going about 100 on the I-10 all the way from the 101 interchange all the way to Atlantic when...

In the fast lane... I see a car pull up VERY fast behind me. It gets about 1.5 car-lengths away when sirens and that annoying flood light comes on!

OH SH*T!
OH SH*T!
OH SH*T!

I knew I shouldn't have done that!

I get a ticket for speeding at 102 mph and I have to go to court.

A few weeks later I go to the courthouse near where I was pulled over. The judge makes a joke:

Judge: "Hmm. Have you been to traffic school any time in the past year and a half?"
Me: "No sir. This is my first incident in over two years."

(The court clerk walks over and whispers into the judge's ear)

Judge: "No... wait. You were going way too FAST! They (the DMV) don't care. You're not going to traffic school!"
Me: ... (smirk, sadness)

Then I go down to the cashier and pay a fine, somewhere in the $300 - $350 range.

I thought that was it. But what really gets you are the effects it has on your DMV record and auto insurance rates. A 100+ mph citation is a 2-point violation and will stay on your record for 3 years. I believe this is the same general severity as a DUI, except that you do not get your car impounded nor you get arrested, so you can imagine how much more you'll be paying on an insurance premium.

If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to answer them.
